Account opening
How to open a betting account and make your first deposit in South Africa
Opening an account takes a few minutes and needs your South African ID number and a phone number. Depositing is instant on most methods. The step that catches people out is FICA verification, which usually blocks the first withdrawal rather than the first deposit.
This is the part of the process nobody writes about, because it does not sell anything. It is also where most first-time accounts get stuck.
The sequence below is the same at every South African licensed bookmaker, whichever one you pick.
What people are searching for
South African monthly search volume and keyword difficulty from a commercial keyword dataset, captured 2026-08-05. These are modelled estimates rather than measured traffic, so the ordering is more reliable than the absolute numbers.
The four steps, and the one that catches people
- 1
Register
Name as it appears on your ID, SA ID number, date of birth, mobile, email. Free, and commits you to nothing.
- 2
Verify (FICA)
ID, proof of address, proof of the account you will withdraw to. Do it now, not later.
- 3
Deposit
Instant EFT, voucher or card. Money is usable immediately on most methods.
- 4
Withdraw
Back to a verified method in your own name. This is where unverified accounts stall.
Step 2 is the one that catches people. Most operators do not enforce it until step 4, so the account works perfectly until the moment you ask for your money. Complete it on the day you register and step 4 is uneventful.
What FICA verification asks for
-
Identity
SA ID card, ID book or passport
-
Address
Utility bill or bank statement, usually under 3 months old
-
Payout method
Bank confirmation letter or statement in your own name
Getting money in
-
Instant EFT
Straight from your bank account, no card needed. Usually the least friction on a first deposit.
-
Voucher
Bought with cash at a retail till, then redeemed in the cashier. No bank account needed to deposit.
-
Card
Debit or credit. Some SA banks block gambling categories by default, which is the usual cause of a decline.
-
Bank transfer
Slowest of the four. Rarely worth choosing unless the others are unavailable to you.
Step one: registration
Every licensed South African operator asks for the same core details, because the law requires them: your full name as it appears on your ID, your South African ID number, your date of birth, a mobile number and an email address.
You must be 18 or over. The ID number is checked against your stated age, so there is no version of this that works for anyone younger.
Registration itself is free and creates no obligation to deposit.
Step two: FICA verification, and why it matters more than you think
FICA is South African financial-intelligence legislation, and every licensed operator applies it. In practice it means the operator must confirm you are who you say you are before money leaves the account.
The documents requested are set by each operator, and the common set is a copy of your ID, proof of residential address, and confirmation of the bank account or payment method you will withdraw to.
The trap is the timing. Most operators let you deposit and bet immediately and only enforce verification at the first withdrawal request. That is why "withdrawal problems" is a heavily searched term for several brands: the account is not broken, it is unverified. Complete FICA on the day you open the account and this never happens to you.
Step three: choosing a deposit method
The methods available differ by operator and each one has a different trade-off. Check the minimum deposit in the cashier before you commit, because it varies and is not always the number advertised.
- Instant EFT, through providers such as Ozow. Money moves immediately from your bank account without a card. Widely supported and usually the lowest-friction option for a first deposit.
- Vouchers, including branded operator vouchers bought at retail tills. These let you fund an account with cash and are why "Betway voucher" and "Hollywoodbets voucher" are searched thousands of times a month. Useful if you do not want to link a bank account.
- Debit and credit card. Straightforward, but some banks decline gambling transactions by default and you may need to enable it.
- Bank transfer. Slowest, and rarely worth it unless nothing else works.
Step four: the first withdrawal
Withdrawals go back to a verified method in your own name. Operators do not pay out to a third party's account, and attempting it will stall the withdrawal.
If you claimed a sign-up bonus, the wagering requirement must be cleared before bonus winnings can be withdrawn. Requesting a withdrawal before that point usually forfeits the bonus.
Processing times are set by the operator and are not published here for any operator, because we have not captured them from a first-party source. Check the cashier page for the operator you choose.

Questions people actually ask
What documents do I need for FICA at a betting site?
The exact list is set by each operator. The commonly requested set is a copy of your South African ID, proof of residential address, and proof of the bank account or payment method you will withdraw to. Check the operator's own verification page for its specific requirements.
Can I deposit without a bank account?
Yes. Retail vouchers let you fund an account with cash bought at a till. You will still need a verified way to receive a withdrawal, so a bank account becomes necessary at the point you want to take money out.
Why was my deposit declined?
The most common cause is the bank rather than the operator: several South African banks block gambling merchant categories by default on cards. Instant EFT and vouchers avoid this. If a card is declined repeatedly, that is usually why.
How long does a withdrawal take?
It depends on the operator and the method, and no timing is published on this site for any operator because none has been captured from a first-party source. Verification status is the largest single factor: a verified account withdrawing to its own bank account is the fastest path everywhere.
